Fruits and vegetables are mostly picked by hand, an undesirable job as the agricultural work is physically demanding with long hours in the scorching sun and exposure to pesticides. The majority of the crop farmworkers are mainly from Mexico, of which half lack legal immigration status. The administration has provided temporary relief from deportation recently due to temporal labor shortages in the farming and agriculture industry. The agricultural workers’ dream of safe and healthy working conditions is denied as they receive little pay and insufficient benefits including inadequate health care. The farmworkers are at risk of contracting the coronavirus at much higher rates due to close working conditions in the fields and packing facilities. La Malinche, a Nahua native woman, was a slave, translator and mistress with Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador credited with overtaking the Aztec empire. She gave birth to one of the first Mestizos (people of mixed European and Indigenous. In contemporary Mexico she is often considered a traitor even though the population is primarily of Mestizo descent and she was a victim of exploitation. The image of the couple is inspired by Mexican painter Jesus de la Helguera, known for his portraits romanticizing Mexican history and portraying indigenous people with European features. The images were often found reproduced on popular paraphernalia such as calendars. Surrounding the central image are four scenes from vintage comics and historietas referencing sexual violence and family trauma. Quien no transa, no avanza… It is also a colloquial word to mean countercultural movement or nightlife scene. The artistic intent was NOT to create traditional objects; instead to explore creating objects that incorporate Latin American and Latinx iconography into aesthetics. Historically the idea of ownership did not exist in Latin America prior to Spanish and European colonization. Rather, an emphasis was placed on a family’s ability to produce their own necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. People in the Americas began constructing the hierarchy of social class identities in association with imported commodities to achieve social mobility by displaying European items (fine cloth/clothes, furniture or art) in their homes or on their body.
